A free self audit is a good way to get started on your energy savings program. "Inspect your house" by doing a detailed walk through and by recording what you discover. Remember, that a self audit is not a substitute for a comprehensive analysis conducted by an energy professional. But it will make you more knowledgeable of your needs and more understanding of what steps you should take next. When it's time for you to have New Buffalo Impact (NBI) conduct a WholeHouse audit, you will better understand why the WholeHouse approach is far superior to a one issue (such as insulation etc) approach.
- Start by checking for air leaks along the baseboard, or edge of the flooring. Check the walls and ceiling junctures. Determine if air flows through electrical outlets, around the fireplace, into the attic or air conditioner. See if the seals are good around windows and doors.
- Outside, check around doors, windows, chimneys, foundations and anywhere air can leak from the house interior. Make sure all enclosures seal properly.
- After you have determined air leaks, move onto insulation. Check and see if the attic insulation is at least at the minimum recommended amount. Also investigate to see if there is a vapor barrier under the attic insulation. And, check and see if the attic vents are unobstructed. In addition, check insulation in any basement areas and in walls.
- Heating and cooling systems should be inspected annually. Check filters, duct works and thermostat controls.
Remember these guidelines as you conduct your self audit. 31% of air lose is through walls, ceilings and floors; 15% from ducts; 14% from fireplaces; 13% from plumbing and electrical penetrations; 11% from doors; 10% from windows; 4% from vents; and 2% from electrical outlets.
Your home is a wholehouse energy system with inter-dependent parts. The WholeHouse Energy Audit from NBI uses state of the art energy assessment technology to design an energy savings approach suited to your individual needs.
