Many homes have rooms that are too hot or too cold. You may notice ice dams on the roof. Drafts and building and mildew problems are also a sign of improperly insulated homes. Insulation slows the heat loss and that saves you money. Proper insulation also makes your home quieter too. Insulation is most effective when coupled with air sealing.
Depending on needs and applications several insulation types are used.
Cellulose is made from recycled newsprint treated with a fire retardant. It provides excellent coverage, and fills in voids between insulation batts, ceiling or wall joists.
Foam insulation is one of several products but usually is made from spray polyurethane or similar compounds. Environmentally safe these foams fill gaps and holes and block air movement.
The most common form of insulation are fiberglass batts. Insulation technique is critical with batts to avoid gaps that become leakage paths for air.
